Uncertainty is one of the hardest experiences for our human brains to cope with, apparently.
They say that conspiracy theories reduce the torment of uncertainty by giving us a way to regain a sense of control.
Makes total sense.
It explains why conspiracy theories are so compelling. In the face of the extremely unpleasant and distressing experience of uncertainty, we choose “evil mastermind trying to get us”.
At least then we know what is going on. There is a kind of relief in that.
But uncertainty is the essence of being alive.
At least, as humans, we sure hope so!
Uncertainty means that the future is open. It is unknown. It is mysterious. It cannot be controlled.
Which means we are free.
If the future were not open, there could be no sense of choice, no free will, no personal agency, no autonomy.
We would be living a pre-programmed reality.
Automatons. Acting out the predetermined movements of a clockwork universe.
So uncertainty might be the price we pay for freedom.
Am I okay with that?
Not really! I absolutely hate worrying about the uncertain future. I want things to turn out ok. For me, for my loved ones, for my community, for the world, for the planet.
But if uncertainty is the price of feeling free, it helps a lot.
It gives me some space to breathe.
Even if my fate is set in the stars, my experience of it is uncertain.
And for that, I am grateful.
Love
Hellene
